Martin Mazik - Conductor
Internationally acclaimed conductor, Martin Mázik is known for his integrity of interpretation and command of orchestral forces which have him in constant demand, conducting nearly 100 performances annually throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. He has been praised for performances which are “energetically and stylishly conducted” (The Boston Globe | Richard Dyer) and “imbued with an aural halo of mystery, macabre reflections, and fiery passion.” (The Belgian Opera Review| Patrick C. Byrne) Since 1996 Mázik has been a resident conductor with the Slovak National Theatre. He has conducted over 500 performances of the core operatic and ballet repertoire, including Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Bartered Bride, Rusalka, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, La traviata, L'elisir d'amore, La cenerentola, Bluebeard's Castle, and the ballets Spartacus, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and La Bayadere.
Martin Mázik opened the 2016/17 season conducting both Rigoletto and La Bohème with Wichita Grand Opera. He then travelled to Spain and France to conduct the Pleven Symphony Orchestra in the Opera 2001 tour of La Bohème, before heading to Slovakia for a concert with the Metropolitný Orchester Bratislava. Mázik then returned to Spain and France to conduct Tosca with Opera 2001. He ended the 2016/17 season with a successful concert in Moscow conducting Vienna's Kálmán Orchestra. Next season, Mázik returns to Spain and France with Opera 2001 in tours of Il barbiere di Siviglia followed by Il trovatore.
During the 2015/16 season, Martin Mázik conducted the Pleven Symphony Orchestra in the Opera 2001 tour of Madama Butterfly and was praised for having “led the orchestra in a state of grace.” (Heraldo de Aragon |Luis Alfonso Bes). He also conducted both Don Carlos and Turandot with Wichita Grand Opera. The season closed with a tour of Rigoletto with Opera 2001.
Respected for his sensitivity to singers, Martin Mázik has conducted some of the world's greatest singers including Joyce DiDonato (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Marcello Giordani (La Bohème), Samuel Ramey (La Bohème, Turandot, Rigoletto, Don Carlos, Faust), Gabriela Beňačkova (Rusalka), Peter Dvorsky (Pagliacci) Hector Sandoval (Faust, Roméo et Juliette), and Kallen Esperian ( La Bohème, Faust).
In demand as a guest conductor, engagements have included the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, State Philharmonic Orchestra Košice, Vienna Johann Strauss Capelle, Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Greater Palm Beach Symphony Orchestra, Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, Okayama Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra Szczecin. He has also conducted operas and tours throughout the United States, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Japan with Deutsches Theater München, Czech Opera Prague, Neue Wiener Operetta, Teatro Lirico d'Europa, and Opera Budweis. Martin Mázik can be featured on recording conducting Rimsky-Korsakov's Overture on three Russian themes with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Prešov, Slovakia, Martin Mázik studied clarinet and piano, composition and conducting at the State Conservatory in Bratislava. He continued his study of conducting (under Ladislav Slovák and Bystrík Režucha) and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He also studied conducting further in Vienna with Karl Oesterreicher. Martin Mázik is fluent in English, German, Spanish, Russian, Czech, and Slovak.
